Looting in Akwa Ibom after two were shot dead

The capital of Akwa Ibom state witnessed a wave of looting and violence on Thursday evening following demonstrations against police brutality as part of the #EndSARS movement.

Government and private properties were set alight, dozens of shops were attacked and looted, many were robbed, vehicles were burnt in Uyo, after the shooting of a protester and another non-protester.

The two were killed and others injured in the capital allegedly by a prison warder and a policemen, according to witnesses at the scene, who said shots were fired in the air to disperse a crowd.

The incidents fuelled unrest and looting that spread across the town shortly before a 9 pm curfew was due to start.

In one video of the looting- seen by FIRST REPORTS – a popular shopping destination at Ibom plaza, DeChoice mall was attacked and vandalised.

A gang of youths can be seen racing in and out of the shopping complex during the heat of the disorder in the state capital, video shows.

Just as in Akwa Ibom, there have been reports of looting carried out by unidentified persons.

In Lagos, supermarket chain Spar was ransacked and goods worth millions of naira carted away.

Also, the palace of the Oba of Lagos was attacked and looted, though the traditional ruler had been evacuated beforehand.
